Colombia

Overview

This class offered at UC has an emphasis on building a social entrepreneurial company in Colombia. The idea of this business model is to have a profitable company that at the same time solves a real issue that people are facing.

My group’s company, Agro, is a social entrepreneurial venture designed to create sustainable local jobs by combining agro-tourism and gastronomy tourism. The business focuses on farms that embrace the farm-to-table philosophy, attracting visitors with authentic local cuisine and fresh, high-quality produce. These farms would operate sustainably by implementing organic farming methods (composting processes and utilizing renewable energy sources).

Agro aims to strengthen local economic stability by creating jobs in agriculture, tourism, and gastronomy, while ensuring that local producers are paid fair prices for their goods. By promoting local products and fostering new commercial networks, the company would contribute to the broader economy. Additionally, revenue generated from tourism and farm sales would be reinvested into sustainable farming practices and educational initiatives. This reinvestment would encourage the adoption of eco-friendly techniques and ensure the long-term growth and viability of the farms.

Through this experience, I learned a lot about how difficult it can be to solve worldly issues. There are always economic, political, and social factors that were in play. Now, I am more confident in my abilities to be an entrepreneur while also keeping in mind the world's needs

Showcase

Above is a showcase of some photos I took while abroad. During this week, we took a beautiful 9-mile bike tour of the city, visited Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, met with social entrepreneurial companies, toured the Botanical Gardens, tasted many fruits at the Paloquemao Market, went up to Monserrate, and visited the Salt Cathedral. Overall, it was a very busy but enriching trip.
